George Kokolas: Positive education for beginners

Professional development conference is... IDEAS!

by Alla McCauchey

Some of my takeaways from George's PLENARY:

The more positive you feel, the more positive energy you get from the people around you.

Positive education is not another program to implement. It should be incorporated into what we do daily.

For PosEd teachers:

1. Reflection (keep notes, keep a journal).

2. Self-intervention (put an oxygen mask on yourself before you start helping others).

3. Embodiment (daily practice what you say).

For PosEd learners:

According to research, among other reasons for academic failure, negative feelings and emotions associated with school make 31%.

We, adults, tend to think that people are happy when they are successful. Children know that they are successful when they are happy.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs goes before Bloom’s cognitive domain! A learner cannot focus on learning and achieve their full potential when their basic needs (physiological, safety, belongingness and love, esteem) are not fulfilled.

Books recommended by George:

Love 2.0 by Fredrickson, Barbara - Love 2.0: Creating Happiness and Health in Moments of Connection

Positive education by Norrish, Jacolyn - Positive Education: The Geelong Grammar School Journey

Website recommended by George:

Character strength survey – www.viacharacter.org

Application to English day camps: Start with addressing the basic needs of the child at camp. Positive education is not taught, it is caught, so be the carrier
